Happy Birthday Dan!

I'm getting to this post a little late today, but I think the birthday boy understands. Today Dan is the big 28. It's a big year. It rounds to 30. Last year it was the usual birthday card, gift, dinner, and drinks. Instead of those meaningless things, this year I gave Dan a sleepless night, a tired wife in need of a shower, and a little eating, sleeping and pooping machine we call "Emma." I think I really topped the previous years :) Happy birthday Dan!!!! We love you!

No more dairy for the Dairy Queen

Goodbye my love! Today Emma's pediatrician ordered me off dairy in preparation to reintroducing Emma to breast milk. Just typing these words brings tears to my eyes. I was raised on a dairy farm for Pete's sake! The idea is that she may be sensitive to cow proteins and she is getting exposed via me. My hope is that she won't have anymore problems and I can once again indulge. I kid you not, our fridge is stocked with milk, yogurt, cottage cheese and ice cream and they are all screaming my name! Not to mention I apparently live with "Deputy Dairy" who is more than willing to yank the ice cream out of my hands. So far I've been off the "good stuff" for about an hour. This is worse than giving birth.

No Picture Today

Well, the object of my camera affection is out of service. At some point last night, Miss E scratched herself in the face and left two decent marks on her face. I just couldn't photograph her injuries. She had another visit from the home health nurse today and I was so worried about what she would think. I mustered up all my courage and did a very scary thing....I cut her finger nails. Why didn't anyone tell me how awful that is! I was sweating bullets while she was sleeping totally unaware of the impending meltdown I would have if I cut too short. Sheesh! Tonight she is swaddled like a crazy person sporting a straight jacket. Hopefully there won't be anymore injuries in the morning!

36 weeks today

Yeah!  Emma is getting closer and closer to becoming a full term baby!  She's already eating so much better.  Hopefully next week her digestive system will be developed enough to tolerate breast milk because her hypoallergenic formula is STINKY and expensive!  

 

RSV requires no RSVP

I am currently in the process of educating myself about RSV and thought I would share my info.  Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)  is the most common cause of respiratory tract infection in children under the age of 5.  Most children are infected by age 2 and experience re-infection throughout life.  For most, it is just a common cold.  For some groups of the population in can become a life-threatening respiratory infection.  Preemies are especially at risk for RSV complications.  Babies born under 36 weeks (Emma), those that will be less than 6 months old at the start of RSV season (Emma), those that attend daycare (Emma), have school age siblings, those exposed to cigarette smoke and those born with heart conditions are high risk.  RSV season generally lasts October through March, however like the flu it can change. 

Emma's pediatrician will arrange for her to receive the Synagis medication.  Synagis is the only FDA approved drug to prevent and/or minimize the effects of RSV in high risk babies.  Synagis is not a vaccine but is a drug given via monthly shots that deliver RSV fighting antibodies to babies.  Synagis is not always covered by insurance so that is one thing we need to look into ASAP.  The cost for a monthly does of Synagis is about $900 and increases with weight.  At the rate Emma is growing, that could be one whopper of a bill by March!  So now you know why we will insist that everyone wash their hands 100 times :)
